Retrospect Galleries | A New Retrospective

Share

Retrospect Galleries are privately run galleries based on Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. They pride themselves on showing innovative, new and exciting work. They have boundless energy, minus the snobbery or pretension, making them a popular source of Australian art.

Retrospect Byron opened in 2008 and specialises in present cutting edge works from established and emerging Australian artists. In late 2010, a second gallery opened located in a new architecturally designed premise at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast. Retrospect Galleries represents a collaboration between Retrospect founder Bree Delian and respected Queensland art consultant Lorraine Pilgrim, and is one of the youngest and most exciting fine art gallery’s in Queensland.  Bree explained "With a fully licensed daytime cafe and evening tapas and wine bar, this purpose built gallery space is an arts hub for local Gold Coast art enthusiasts, as well as interstate and international visitors.

The galleries don't like to be fenced in and as a result, showcase a wide variety of works ranging from street/urban art, through to the finest of draughtsmanship and painterly works. In regards to the artists they showcase, there are too many to list individually, but Bree stated "at the risk of offending by omission a little taster includes: Anthony Lister, Courtney Brimms, Mike Chavez, Alberto Sanchez, Doug Bartlett, Tony Burrows, Jan Van Dijk, Shaun Tan, Rober Mars and Nikky Morgan-Smith.

Just like the range of artists and styles, the gallery has a diverse range of work for sale to suit all budgets. The gallery supports emerging artists whose prices are very reasonable, meaning art lovers can purchase highly skilled original work at a great price. Additionally, Retrospect represent nationally recognised artists whose work sells at prices aimed toward the higher end of the contemporary market. Bree explained "we find that customers who start out by purchasing a limited edited signed artists print will often come back within the next year and buy their first original artwork".

As well as having the galleries open for foot traffic, Retrospect have shows opening every two weeks at both galleries. For the Broadbeach Gallery the next opening is on the 16th of September and will showcase 'Suspended' by Kareena Zerefos. This will include exquisite, refined and improbable drawings and the beautiful paintings of Lisa Lee who captures movement and stillness in the same painting, in an extraordinary way. The Byron gallery has a show called "Drawn Together" opening in September 9. This features the fascinating collaborative work of 5 artists; Rene Bolten, Hilary Herrmann, Kellie O'Demspey, James Cruickshank and Michelle Dawson.

In addition to these, the galleries are currently gearing up for their first international art fare. For news on this or other upcoming shows, check out their website here or like them on facebook for the Byron Bay gallery here and for the Gold Coast here
