Balmores represents a large and burgeoning street culture scene encompassing hip hop, streetportation and the creative arts. The label aims to stay relevant with trends, but at the same time, pioneer their own open ended style that complements their beliefs.
"I wouldn't call what we do fashion design, so much as street fashion styling" told co-founder Darren Poh, when discussing the transition into the fashion world. Balmores was formed in an attempt to help address what the label's founders felt was a lack of creativity within the street wear market. "We attempted to use Balmores to shine a light on the street culture in our part of the world (Melbourne, Australia) and to help unite people under a global community" he said.
The creativity involved in fashioning fresh designs is unbelievably challenging and rewarding for the team. "For Balmores, it is about the artistic process, in search for the ultimate outcome" Darren explained. However, the brand presses the point that that they are not necessarily trying to reinvent street fashion, rather trying to add to the depth of what they feel to be an incredibly rich global culture.
Building the brand to a point where it demands attention on a day-to-day basis has been very advantageous for the team. Seeing the result of an idea, through hard work, becoming reality only spurs the label to do more, and provides them with boundless enthusiasm. Also, approaching anything they do with an underdog mentality, puts them in the frame of mind of having to work harder, smarter, and more creatively than everyone else to achieve their aims.
Future plans for Balmores is to keep producing consistent, high quality, fresh work. "Wherever we take the brand, we want to be genuine ambassadors for the street culture we represent and keep progressing. On the product side, expect to see the expansion of Balmores into accessories and headwear this year" said Darren.
