Grand Scheme is an independently run art and lifestyle label that blurs the lines between fashion, street wear and art. Forming in 2006, the label has combined a mix of perseverance, hard work and talent to cement them as one of today’s favourite labels for a clean street style.
When it comes to the word fashion, Jimmy Bligs, the man behind Grand Scheme, finds it to be a bit of a wank and as he doesn't consider himself a fashion designer. Rather, he sees the process as making clothes that look good, are functional and make you feel good when wearing them stating, "fashion fades, but style is forever".
Starting out, Grand Scheme never really expected to establish itself as one of Australia's premier street wear labels. "Honestly it wasn’t something I expected to be doing, I wanted to design tee shirts graphics but the rest just evolved with the brand, now I really enjoy the other side of things. I still love designing tee shirt graphics though, it's such a good way to get your ideas out and interacting with the world" Jimmy explained.
As well as using his own designs, the label also collaborates with popular street artists as part of its limited edition artist's prints. The Label has already worked with the likes of Anthony Lister, Nate Van Dyke and Revok and has plans to keep expanding. “Some upcoming Artist collaborations for the label include pop/political veteran Ron English and Australia’s hottest new street art export Kid Zoom. Jimmy stated, "Kid Zoom is currently living in NY and monitoring under Ron English so it was perfect to get them both on board for next season" he said.
In addition to these, they also have a collaboration with Australian spray paint company Ironlak coming out, along with the self-proclaimed best overall collections they have ever produced.
Coming from a street art background and having 10+ years as an artist before starting the label has definitely given Grand Scheme an advantage in terms of the designs and artists they work with. "It’s the reason we can collaborate with an artist who won’t work with any other brands but they will work with Grand Scheme because they know we have an authentic background and understanding of what they do" stated Jimmy.
Jimmy finds the most rewarding thing about running his own label is that it's far more than a job stating, "it’s like a baby that you have raised from nothing and released into the world. Just seeing people wear your gear and be into it is always a kick".
Grand Scheme views the Australian fashion scene as a whole as quite a small scene that can be tough. However, they feel that Australia is producing a lot of industry leading labels we should be proud of.
Grand Scheme’s advice to anyone wanting to start a new label is to do your research, make sure you’re ready because it’s a lot of work and risk but also very rewarding when it goes right. He also suggests working with the right people in whose strengths are your weaknesses as you can’t do everything well, but in the beginning you will probably have to try to until you are in the position to pay someone else to do it for you.
And remember … Keep Scheming!!
