“If you haven't seen garments like ours before, maybe that's a sign that it's your turn to start something new in your town.”
Her name is Emily Hosie and she is the designer/creator of the grungy, underground clothing label Thirsty Vixen. The label was conceived after Emily received feedback regarding clothes she made or altered for herself, after finding her taste different to what was readily available. Once she realised there was a market in her designs, she started an online store. "I started by putting just 5 garments on our Facebook page and from there our following of fans has grown immensely, to the point where we have different designs coming out every 2 weeks" she said.
Whether it is high end runway fashion or street wear, Emily has always had an appreciation for the fashion world. However, she has always found herself attached to the grunge side of things made famous by the likes of Kurt Cobain, who would wear multiple patterns, ripped jeans and over sized clothes. "When I was younger, I would go shopping with the girls, they would get dresses and heels, I'd get boots and ripped jeans. It's still the same to this day when we go out, they wear heels and a dress, I wear some sort of extravagant leggings and a ripped over sized shirt. I think everyone has their own sense of style, you just have to find it and own it" she explained.
Inspiration for the label doesn't come from anything physical as such; rather it is based on the mentality that 'you are only young once.' Emily wanted to make clothing that represented today's youth who realise that there is a limited shelf life on the years they can go crazy dancing all night, staying up ridiculous hours partying like rock stars and living in the moment.
An aspect that makes the label unique is that their garments are all made to order. This means any colour; cut or style you see on any of their garments can be mixed and matched to your tastes. "I myself correspond through message to my customers to make sure they are getting exactly what they want" Emily adds. Additionally, Thirsty Vixen aims to be unbeatable when it comes to prices because they feel that it is one aspect many shoppers struggle to get their heads around regarding the competition.
Having just had a successful official launch party/Runway show, the label already has the wheels in motion for a couple more runways at a few venues throughout Melbourne. They are also toying with the possibility of an Australian Tour towards the end of the year, and are actively trying to get their brand in a few boutiques around Melbourne, so keep your eyes peeled.
